Approach is one of the key players behind the recently launched Itsme secure identification solution. Firmly positioned in the (cyber)security domain, the company’s recent acquisition has inspired ambitions to explore new “territories” such as IoT and blockchain.
Founded in 2001, Approach has already experienced several transformations. Initially, it focused on developing management solutions for IT infrastructures and data centres. However, just a year later, the company shifted its focus, influenced by the market downturn following the 9/11 attacks. As the leadership at the time explained, this change was necessary to adapt to the shifting environment.
In 2011, another strategic pivot occurred, this time refocusing on security. According to current CEO David Vanderoost, the decision was driven by the existence of internal expertise in this field, complemented by high-profile clients such as European institutions and NATO. These capabilities, he noted, had not been fully utilised until then. Consequently, by early 2012, this focus on security became nearly exclusive, with one notable exception: Atlas, a SaaS solution for managing expatriates for large multinationals.
Interestingly, this year, the company decided to completely separate the Atlas business from its other activities. A dedicated structure and website are currently being developed, further emphasising the company’s commitment to its core (cyber)security mission.
Services and Solutions
In terms of services, Approach offers comprehensive security solutions that cover both infrastructure and application security. The company provides (cyber)security and GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) services alongside software development. While its primary focus remains on large corporations and organisations, it also caters to mid-sized SMEs and even start-ups, particularly those operating in the fintech space.
For example, Antwerp-based start-up Rombit is among its clients. Approach tested and secured several applications for Rombit, including one managing interactive parking signs deployed in Antwerp. Notably, both companies share a common investor, Michel Akkermans (Pamida, Volta Ventures, Capricorn ICT, ex-Clear2Pay).
